1950s
In response to the Baltimore Building and Construction Trades Department’s efforts to limit construction to union-only contractors, seven local general and subcontractors met in the home of Charles Mullan on May 1, 1950 to establish Associated Builders and Contractors of Baltimore.
1960s
Led by the association’s 1st Executive Vice President, John P. Trimmer, the merit shop philosophy began to spread into other Northeastern states. At a Philadelphia rally, the powerful AFL-CIO formally “declared war” on the association of merit shop contractors and vowed to put it out of business by any means.
1970s
Marked by unprecedented union violence against merit shop contractors at the beginning of the decade, ABC members and enlightened owners would not be intimidated. ABC became known as the fastest growing association in the country, adding 55 new chapters and skyrocketing from 3,000 to 15,000 members.
1980s
Spearheaded by 1981 National ABC Chairman and founder of BE&K Construction, Ted C. Kennedy, ABC began the massive task of creating Wheels of Learning. The program consisted of four-year, Department of Labor approved apprenticeship programs in 16 construction crafts.
1990s
As ABC computerized its internal workings – developing a comprehensive website, CD-ROM training programs and online membership directories – it continued to put major emphasis on developing its grassroots, legislative and training programs.
2000s
With 1976 National Chairman and Reagan Ambassador to France Joe Rodgers warning to “Get into Politics or Get out of Business” as its mantra, ABC played a key role in the election of George Bush and a pro-free enterprise Congress in 2000.
